Seamoss is becoming more well known and established as the new ‘Superfood’ of today. What people should know is that seamoss or Irish seamoss as it also commonly known has actually been around for centuries.

During the 1800’s the Irish used seamoss during the food famine as a food replacement and for medicinal purposes. They made a drink called Irish Moss which they used to treat cold and flu sickness and symptoms. Even though seamoss grows in many countries, the Irish named theirs, ‘Irish seamoss’ which was then introduced to other countries and cultures who use it to this day and still call it Irish seamoss. Irish seamoss only grows in Ireland, just the same as Jamaican seamoss only grows in Jamaica.

There are many different types of Seamoss and it grows in various countries including Ireland, Europe, Caribbean Islands, Canada and Africa. The most common name of seamoss thanks to Dr. Sebi is Chondrus Crispus. Dr. Sebi has been the main influencer of seamoss highlighting it’s phenomenal properties and explains why we should all incorporate this amazing product into our diets. The 3 most commonly used seamoss are Chondrus Crispus, Genus Gracilaria and Eucheuma Cottonii. The wildcrafted organic seamoss used by Essential Elements is Genus Gracilaria and it is from the beautiful Caribbean Island of St. Lucia.

Seamoss is a natural organic algae from the sea and comes in array of colours. It’s mainly known as being a red/brown colour but can be found in shades of green, purple, yellow and black. It latches onto rocks within the sea and gathers all the nutrients and minerals from its growing environment. It is rich in Carrageen. This is used in many products we use daily as it is a thickening agent. Seamoss is also a prebiotic, which is a type of dietery fiber that’s essentially fertilizer for probiotics (healthy bacteria in your gut) which then helps support digestion.
